Siapa sih yang tidak kenal dengan trilogi Lord of The Ring? (Paling tidak bukan saya…) Saya kenal buku pertama dari trilogi ini, “The Fellowship of The Ring” setelah seorang teman memberi oleh-oleh buku tersebut sepulang dari Australia. So, I read it in the origin language, bukan terjemahan, which is, very enlightening. Kesan pertama saya waktu itu adalah, “wow… berat…” Bahasa yang digunakan pada novel ini sangat puitis dan “nyastra.” Banyak sekali kata-kata baru yang belum pernah saya temui:

That very month was September, and as fine as you could ask. A day or two later a rumour (probably started by the knowledgeable Sam) was spread about that there were going to be fireworks – fireworks, what is more, such as had not been seen in the Shire for nigh on a century, not indeed since the Old Took died.

Days passed and The Day drew nearer. An odd-looking waggon laden with odd-looking packages rolled into Hobbiton one evening and toiled up the Hill to Bag End. The startled hobbits peered out of lamplit doors to gape at it. It was driven by outlandish folk, singing strange songs: dwarves with long beards and deep hoods. A few of them remained at Bag End. At the end of the second week in September a cart came in through Bywater from the direction of the Brandywine Bridge in broad daylight. An old man was driving it all alone. He wore a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, and a silver scarf. He had a long white beard and bushy eyebrows that stuck out beyond the brim of his hat. Small hobbit-children ran after the cart all through Hobbiton and right up the hill. It had a cargo of fireworks, as they rightly guessed. At Bilbo’s front door the old man began to unload: there were great bundles of fireworks of all sorts and shapes, each labelled with a large red G and the elf-rune, .

Namun, lama-kelamaan, setelah beberapa halaman, terasa sekali bahwa Tolkien menggunakan bahasa yang sangat indah dan lyrical. Banyak bagian-bagian cerita di dalam buku ini yang merupakan lirik lagu dan pantun:

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Untuk mereka yang membaca bukunya dan kemudian menonton filmnya, terutama SAYA, akan merasa banyak bagian dari film tersebut yang berbeda dengan bukunya. Contohnya adalah hubungan antara Frodo dan teman-teman hobbitnya (Sam, Pippin dan Merry). Film menunjukkan bahwa mereka bertiga seperti “terpaksa” ikut dengan Frodo, padahal buku menyebutkan bahwa memang mereka dengan sukarela ingin membantu Frodo menjalankan misinya, padahal mereka tidak terlalu yakin pada saat itu tentang misi itu sendiri. Buku menunjukkan bagaimana kesetiaan dan persahabatan mereka sejak awal, dan hal itu tidak terlihat dari filmnya. Saya juga tidak suka bagaimana filmnya menggambarkan Boromir, karena di bukunya sendiri, Boromir terkesan bijaksana dan ksatria dan hanya ingin membantu Frodo menjalankan misinya.

Buat saya, buku ini menyihir, dan Tolkien adalah jenius dalam menciptakan karakter, “dunia” dan plot yang luar biasa serta memiliki kemampuan untuk menggunakan bahasa yang indah. Beliau basically adalah “Pencipta” dari Middle Earth, tempat dimana para hobbit, men, elves, dwarves, orcs, wizards, ents dkk tinggal. Ia bahkan menciptakan bahasa untuk masing-masing ras… He is indeed a genius.

Karena penasaran dengan kelanjutan cerita dari buku pertamanya ini, saya kemudian mencari dan membeli buku kedua dari trilogi ini, The Two Towers, di toko buku kinokuniya, Jakarta. Masa-masa itu buku impor sangat sulit didapatkan di dalam negeri. Dan setelah merasakan indahnya buku pertama trilogi ini, saya merasa sayang jika misalnya saya membaca terjemahannya, karena tentu saja karya terjemahan tidak akan mampu benar-benar memberikan kesan yang sama dengan membaca buku dari bahasa aslinya. Sementara itu buku ketiganya, The Return of the King, juga saya dapatkan sebagai oleh-oleh seorang sahabat yang bekerja di Singapura.
